Hotel Oceanside to Downtown Seoul

Hi there,

Appreciate some advice.

We PLAN to spend 3 nights at Hotel Oceanside near ICN airport from 21 to 24 Dec due to late arrival and early flight departure. But we also wish to explore the downtown area therefore very confuse as to stay 2 nights at downtown and 1 night near Airport? We worry about early flight departure on 24 Dec therefore cannot decide which is better.

If we choose to stay 3 nights at Oceanside, can anybody advise how can we transport from the hotel to the nearest metro station so that we can connect to downtown sightseeing for 3 days? Of course taking taxi is a choice but it would be too expensive.

Do u think this is a good choice?

Please please advice.

Thank you.

Hotel Oceanside to Downtown Seoul

Not an easy one.

Best plan if ytou intend to stay at Oceanside is to take shuttle to airport then go into Seoul from there. Limosine bus is around 7 UK pounds each way, seat buses are cheaper.

The subway is tedious, but cheaper; again go to airport, thentake subway to Gimpo, change and take subway into town.

Not stayed there; it%26#39;s cheap, so don%26#39;t expect too much.

i love to shop, any hotels near Dongdaemun market?

I am looking for a hotel that is safe and within walking distance....Please provide with more choice ranging to 5star..

Thanks

Hi,

Would like to know whether there are public transport services available from Gimpo airprt to Mt Sorak? I understand that the nearest city to Mt Sorak national park is Sokcho City?

Thanks

Trip for family of 5 to Korea

Hi, we are a family of 5 with 3 kids (ages 11,9 and 7) and are keen to visit Seoul and Jeju Island for 8 days around 3rd week of Decemer this year. Any good recommendations for places to visit for 8 days? We had gone hiking,horse-riding , white-water rafting and canoeing on our last holiday in the Canadian Rockies during the summer month this year. Is it easier to get around by public transport or to rent a car with kids along ? How about language barrier , is English widely spoken here ?

Would appreciate a lot if anyone would give me some good ideas.

I am thinking of a 6days F&E trip to Seoul btw 4th-22nd Dec

1) I understand there seems to be a lot of shopping markets in Seoul. Are they all replications of one another? I am more into shopping for clothing, shoes, bags, accessories. Do leave down your recommendation... * It will be useful if you can list down the average cost of buying i.e shoes, bags etc :)

Is there any particular place to buy shoes(men or women) or bags(women)

I am more of a ';wufenpu(taipei),Fa yuen street(hongkong),chatuchak(bangkok) type of shopper.Cheap afforable yet trendy clothing..

2) How are is there any must see places in SEoul? any good art museum, scenic places.

3) Is there any skiing resort in Seoul? I am thinking of bringing my wife to see snow and maybe skiing..If there isnt, may i know how do i go about booking for which include the skiing and transprtation back and forth back to my hotel if thats possible and the rough cost

Thanks!!!!!!

I am thinking of a 6days F%26amp;E trip to Seoul btw 4th-22nd Dec

Perhaps I can offer some insight into Q3.

I am also leaving on a F%26amp;E trip to Korea in Dec. According to my research, there are a few small ski resorts near Seoul (perhaps an hour%26#39;s drive) but these are small ones with lesser number of ski lifts %26amp; slopes. According to my research, the most popular ski resort is Yongpyong where it is a all-in-one. This is about 3-4hrs away eastbound of Seoul. The next choice would be Muju ski resort which is southbound (also 3-4 hrs away) They have their respective websites in English. Dec is their peak ski season hence try to avoid going on weekends as advised by another thread here.

What I did was to schedule a night in Yongpyong %26amp; then another night in Sokchu where Mt Sorak is. I%26#39;ve read that Sorak is a must-see with breathtaking views albeit cold during winter. They are about an hour apart. There is also a spa resort in the vicinity. I booked airtickets/hotels/all transfers (including Yongpyong %26amp; Sorak) through Chan Bros in SG.

Hope this helps :)

I am thinking of a 6days F%26amp;E trip to Seoul btw 4th-22nd Dec

Here is the list of nearest ski resorts within 1 hours by shuttle bus from seoul.

1. Jisan resort

2. Yangji fine resort

3. Bearstown resort

4. Gangchon resort

5. Starhill resort

2 hours from seoul

1. Vivaldi park (Daemyoung resort)

2. Oakvalley resort

2.5-3 hrs from seoul

1. Phoenix park

2. Sungwoo resort

3. Yongpyung resort

3-3.5 hrs from seoul

1. High one resort

2. Muju resort

I recommend Jisan, vivaldi park, phoenix park, Sungwoo, Yongpyung, Highone and Muju resort.

  • DMZ zone - worth the visit?

I will be in South Korea for 7 nights this December holidaying free %26amp; easy. I am wondering if the DMZ is worth the visit, price aside. For travellers who have been there, what kind of emotions/thoughts did you walk away with? or will it be another tourist trap? Thanks :)

DMZ zone - worth the visit?

Depends on your interest. Would you be interested visiting Ground Zero if you are in New York city? or Killing Field in Cambodia? Berlin wall in Germany? DMZ is, at least to Koreans, equally tragic site as those, since it%26#39;s the place where you can see the actual military tension between North and South Koreas. Two have agreed only to cease battle but not the Korean War itself. You can see border guards from twp countries facing each other at the official meeting room. Also a secret tunnel dug by North Korea. You can do search on this forum and find many reviews on DMZ tour. Many seemed to find it unique and interesting. For me, it%26#39;s very tragic site where two Koreas are involved in silent warfare.

DMZ zone - worth the visit?

Thanks for the insight. I think I%26#39;ll make that visit :)

  • 1 month Korea trip + Plastic Surgery

My friend and I would be heading to Korea hopefully at end december, otherwise early January..

It is our first time to the country and we are going to backpack around. Besides that, our main goal is to get cosmetic/plastic treatment and we hope to get some recommendations as to where should we go...

I have read that Busan has good surgeons but how about Seoul?

Also, As we intend to travel around 2 weeks around korea. should we go for the surgery first or travel around first? Any advice on car rental - eg. hyundai sonata - or should we just take public transport?

Need all the help we can get!

1 month Korea trip + Plastic Surgery

Are you kidding me? I walked couple blocks of street in Chungdam-dong (it%26#39;s in gangnam, south of Han river) area in Seoul, I never saw that many cosmetic/plastic clinics and dermatology clinics all congested in one area in my life! I heard that there are many clinics like that all over Seoul.

I got laser treatment for my skin, removing sunspots and freckles, which cost me about $600 USD. I heard some cosmetic/plastic clinics display photos of their famous clients (Korean celebrities). Do careful research before you walk-in any of clinics. Sorry I can%26#39;t recommend any since I didn%26#39;t have personal experience. If you have anyone who can read Korean fluently, try search through Korea%26#39;s local search sites such www.naver.com or www.daum.net

As per renting car, unless you planning to visit remote areas outside of city, I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it. There is aplenty of taxis, public transportation is very convenient and traffics in Seoul and Busan are pretty bad.

1 month Korea trip + Plastic Surgery

    Hi there,

I am doing research about cosmetic surgery in Asia and I am trying to find people who are open about talking about their experiences and maybe even be willing to have us follow them around when they go about their surgeries. If you are willing to have a chat with me or share any information at all it would be greatly appreciated. you can reach me at this email. Thanks a bunch.

Driving in the snow in korea

    Cell Phone Rental in Seoul

    http://www.skyperoaming.com/En/center/faq.asp

anyone ever rent one of these while in Seoul? do they work well? any other ways to rent a cell phone in Seoul?

    Cell Phone Rental in Seoul

I rent from my hotel. Bear in mind Korean system is not just a different frequency but also may be a different transmission system.

    Cell Phone Rental in Seoul

I rented a cell phone from KTF rental desk at airport. I have a Verizon wireless cellphone which I was able to use it to call US and send text message to both Korea and US, but I couldn%26#39;t use it to make cal within Korea, beside roaming charge was pretty stiff.

    Yes.

It is cheaper than other service providers. There are 3 main plyers in Korea and other small companies. However, skype roaming is providing reliable service and reasonable prices, I think.

    Jeju hostel- urgent help, plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I am planning to go to Jeju this weekend (from 8th Nov to 10th Nov). I found cheap hostel from Lonely Planet book but the telephone number is wrong.

Is there anybody know this hostel and correct phone nr.

    Yeohang Donghwa Guesthouse (in Yungmun)

Or if you know any budget hostel about 15000 won then please help me.

    Thanks a lot

    Jeju hostel- urgent help, plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I am sorry that you ran into such a problem. Chances are that place no longer exist since I tried to find info on Korea%26#39;s biggest search engine, www.naver.com but I couldn%26#39;t find any information. I did quick google search and find this place, www.hostelsweb.com/hostelsweb.com/hostel.php

Which is youth hostel and seems capable to handle foreign visitor. Only drawback is that hostel is located at least 1 or 2 hr away from airport, so you have to carefully organize your transportation there. You can also try to find regular hotel that%26#39;s more accessible, I did quick search on web, and I saw many places quoting under ';$100 USD'; per night,

Thanks alot blee246, I found Jeju Hiking Inn (in Seowipo, in the South of Jeju) with a reasonable price of 22000won for a twin room. It would be half cheaper (per person) if someone share with me, but yeh that%26#39;s already the best i could find.

  • Thing to do in Seoul with 2 young children

    Hi,

    Planning to Seoul on 15 Nov - 22 Nov 2008 with 2 young Childrens age 5 %26amp; 7.

Would appreciate any helps and advise on following:-

    1. Accomodation: Budget USD200-250/ day

    2. Places of interest which young childrens can enjoy.

    3. How to go about on transportation. From Airport and within City.

    4. Beside Seoul which nearby city should visit.

    thanks

    Began

Thing to do in Seoul with 2 young children

    2. there are alot of shrines/palaces in Seoul itself, wisely choose a few to go, Changdeokgung Palace and Gyeongbokgung Palace is a good choice.

As for the kids, they should love the Lotto World, as it%26#39;s a theme park, just like Disney land.

As for the adults who loves to shop.. Dongdaemun has a lot of things to offer.. but if u want to go for more local staff with more local price.. go for Namdaemun.

    3. To save cost, i took a bus from Incheon airport to Gimpo (domestic) Airport (Bus 13) and from there i took the subway.. but traveling along with kids, u might wanna look for busese that directly bring u to city center.. but bear in mind that Seoul road traffic is pretty serious..

    4. definitely recommend ';Suwon';. U can go for the Hwaseong Fortress (UNESCO site) and Korean Folk Village. Just simply make the arrangements with the tourist information center just conveniently located next to the Suwon Train station. If Lotto World is not enough for the kids, they got this Everland Theme Park in Suwon too. Just look for it with the Tourist information center.

Thing to do in Seoul with 2 young children

    2. Coex Aquarium in Coex mall : Samsung station (Subway line no.2)

    3. Take Limousine buses, there are a lot in the airport

    4. Youngin - Korea folk village

I just got back from Seoul with my children and I can relate to your situation. Lotte World Adventure Park is a great start. It has an indoor and outdoor themeparks and if you can, book the Lotte hotel next to it. There is also an everland theme park and it%26#39;s huge and fantastic but it might be a bit far to travel. If you are into themepark, Blue Canyon Water themepark is great too but not sure if it might be too cold by Nov.

Head for KAL Limousine to and from the airport. Very clean, comfortable and punctual. It%26#39;s only KRW14,000 for adult and KRW7,000 for children.

I personally find that Jeju Island and Gyeongju are 2 very interesting city to visit outside seoul. You can email me for more details. I will try to help while it%26#39;s all still fresh in my mind.

With your budget for accomodation, you have lots of choice.

My girl who is also 5 loved everything Korea. She loved Lotte World but prefers Everland if asked to choose between the 2. Everland has more rides, and more characters walking around to take photos with. And the safari ride is really interesting for the kids. Just make sure u get the seats on the side of the driver : )

She liked Seoraksan and the beach at Sokcho too. We did the Waterpia hotsprings water world there too.

Maybe it because of the nature at Nami Island and the little rides, she loved that too.

Not too sure if your kids like palaces, but if u think they cannot do a guided tour through, u may wish to just choose one palace to do.

We did Seoul grand park with a Korean family recently. Both our 5 yr olds love the zoo (which is also the park.)

    We recommend Suwon too.

Would love to hear all about it on your return. Were planning on traveling with our two age 6 and 7 in February.

    began88,

hello can u share with me on where u will be staying in seoul? are u bringing yr kids to the ski resort?

how far is yongpyong ski resort from seoul?

    Hi Toffeclub,

I think to Yongpong Ski Resort is about 2 1/2 hrs.

I think Nov is too early for snow. I will check it out when I%26#39;m there.

BTW I will be staying at Fraser Place Central.

Will let you know when I%26#39;m back.

Teaching English at a winter camp in Korea

    Hi anyone

Has anyone from Australia/USA etc had experience in teaching English language at a winter or summer camp in South Korea?

I am interested in doing this for the four week period in January, but would like some feed back on pitfalls to watch out for, information on accommodation provided, food etc.

Unfortunately the one ';link'; I had has only camps which commence in late December and I cannot leave Sydney until 4th January due to a close relative%26#39;s wedding on the 3rd. I saw one advertised as being held the dates I wanted, but was unsure of what to do. Is it necessary to be super cautious of these recruitment agents?

I would appreciate any help or advice pls on how to proceed.

    Year End Holidays

I was thinking of taking a short (5-7 days?) year end break with my girlfriend in Seoul.

The idea is the shop a bit, see a bit of snow (hotspring maybe), have a bit of fun at the amusement parks, and take a break.

Is the period between Christmas and New Year a good time to come? Would shops and establishments be closed for the holidays?

    Year End Holidays

Koreans celebrate Christmas big time, so it%26#39;s good idea to book your hotel ASAP. Especially ski resort since you are interested in snow/hot spring, many Koreans love to go skiing/snow boarding during their holidays. You can find many info about ski/hot spring resorts in this forum easily.

If you are in Seoul, you can shop and see beautiful Christmas decoration around Myeong-dong area. Also do check out many underground shopping arcades, which is great way to to take break from bitter December weather. You can also sample many hot street snacks all over the city. (yumm. I really miss that green tea flavored dough with red bean stuffed pancake!) If you are lucky and it snows while you are there, I would go park or palaces since snow there are more pristine than say busy city streets.

    Year End Holidays

If I were to come for 7 days, and divide my time between seoul city and say a hot spring / ski resort, does this make sense?

Which are good (reasonable priced and easy access) hot spring / ski resorts and how does one get there? Are they in the same place (I mean ski and springs)?

  • Snow in YongPyong in December

I will be in Seoul from 7-14 Dec, and am planning to visit YongPyong for skiing. Can someone tell me if YongPyong gets snow in early-mid December? Thanks.

    Snow in YongPyong in December

Sorry, but during the period of your visit, slim chances for %26#39;real%26#39; snow. Still you will have no trouble skiing and enjoying the winter atmosphere.

    Hope my reply helped.

    Snow in YongPyong in December

Thank you very much for your reply. I%26#39;ve since been trying to figure which type of rooms to book at YongPyong - there are so many choices. I want a room for a family of 4. Should I go with Dragon or the Tower condonimium? And is there self-service laundry available at the resort? Much appreciation for your advise.

If possible, choose either Tower or Villa (I don%26#39;t really know much about %26#39;Yongpyong%26#39; condomium).

Each has its own merits and downsides. Tower is conveniently located in terms of rental, supermarket, but it reminds me of a normal flat or apartment. Villa has nicer surroundings and makes you feel you%26#39;re staying in a chalet or lodge. Basically, convenience or ambience. If I have to pick one, I would recommend Villa.

Don%26#39;t have answers for the laundry service, sorry.

Thank you very much - you have been most helpful :)

I have an answer and a question too.

I went to Yongpyong about 20 years ago, they only had Dragon Valley Hotel and Condo at that time, so they are the oldest. The Villa, amongst others are newly added so presumably better.

I want to go to Yongpyong at the end of December this year with kids, want to know if the snow be OK at this time of the year (all my previous trip were around chinese new year - snow was excellent then).

    I%26#39;m also from SG.

Would like to check if anyone has been to Greenpia Condo also in YongPyong, believe this is the new place %26amp; want to know more about it.

    Thank you.

Glad to know a fellow Singapore resident is also planning on visiting YP. I%26#39;ve had serious problem with hotel reservations though. I%26#39;ve sent several e-mails to the resort, but to date, have received no reply. I can%26#39;t seem to make my reservations! How did you do yours?

    Hi BusyMomSG,

Try calling YP reservation nos. 822 3270 1271/2/5 to book the reservation. The price is surprising reasonable (KRW100,000 per nite for 4 persons room / KRW150,000 per nite for 5 persons room). The reception is friendly BUT the biggest downside with calling the reservation line is language, they speak very limited English hence you need to be very patient %26amp; repeat your request.

I did manage to get through to them %26amp; keep my fingers crossed that the reservation has been done correctly. I did get a confirmtion (via email) from YP re: my reservation albeit it was all in Korean!! The date %26amp; rate seem to gel tho%26#39; ^___^

    Have fun!

    Winter vs Autumn Tour

I%26#39;m planning to join a package tour to Korea for a week, wonder if autumn (Oct) or winter (Dec) is a better season to go? How cold (temperature) is the weather from 18 - 25 Dec?

    Winter package/itinery is:

    Day 1 -

Chunsheon %26amp; Namiseom Island / shopping at Myeong-dong Street %26amp; Road to Happiness

    Day 2 -

Mt Sorak Ski Resort /Hot Spring, Shinheung Temple

    Day 5 -

    Day 6 -

Blue House, World Cup Stadium, Dong Cong Ha Cho, Ginseng Centre %26amp; Purple Crystal.

If we can extend 2 more days in Seoul, what are the place we can go/ do on Christmas Eve %26amp; Day? Normally will there be snowing during this time?

Is it possible to go for free %26amp; easy tour in winter?

    All feedback/suggestion are welcomed. Thanks.

    Winter vs Autumn Tour

    Hello!

Each season has its own unique beauty. But easier to travel in fall. Because it%26#39;s quite cold and windy in Winter here. And Korea%26#39;s fall is really beautiful, with crystal clear sky, clear air, and beaufitul streets with autumn leaves.

I recommend you to have Dalk kalbi, spicy chicken dish and walnut cakes in Chuncheon. I guess your schedule on the fifth day in Seoul would be quite busy and hectic. Also many foreign visitors shop at Namdaemun shopping district, as there are numerous goods, both Korean traditional and imported from diverse countries. (from Malaysia, as well :D)

How about visit Korean traditional palaces? Gyeongbokgung Palace is the biggest and magnificent one of the Chosun Dynasty. Or you can enjoy beautiful autumn leaves and weather at the Duksugung Palace. Also, you can walk from Myeongdong to Cheonggye Liver to Insadong.

(If you visit Korea in winter) During the Christmas holidays, central Seoul areas across Cenggye Liver are beautifully decorated with lights. So you can enjoy nightlife in Seoul as well.

I hope my reply is useful:D

    Winter vs Autumn Tour

    Thankyou moonliver...

Is there anywhere we can experience snowfall in Dec?

Usually, all regions except Jeju Island(southernmost island) enjoy snow in winter. Particularly Gangwon(eastern) province has a lot of snow.. (Mt Sorak is located there.) Seoul snows too, by the way. And near Seoul there are some ski resorts where you can enjoy “artificial” snow. Hope you%26#39;ll find my answer satisfying :D

Would there be snowing in Seoul during christmas? Many thanks!

Dining etiquette for eating Korean food

When Koreans sit down to a traditional meal, they relax on a clean paper floor. The meal comes to them on a low table. Usually food is served in a nearly arranged collection of small metal bowls. Generally used is pair of chopsticks and a flat soupspoon. Foreigners may be surprised to find that Koreans will often eat a bowl of rice and may be have an extra helping even though dishes remain unfinished. Don’t let this preference for rice bother you; to Koreans, rice – not meat – is considered to be the main dish of meal. In fact, one of the most common street greetings Bam mogossoyo? Mean, “Have you eaten rice?” If you run out of a particular item, the lady of the house will bring more. When you have had enough to eat, place your chopsticks and soupspoon to the right of your bowl; do not leave them stuck in the rice or resting on any of the bowls. A dish of sliced and chilled fruit is usually served as a dessert. Depending on the season, muskmelon, strawberries, apples, pears and watermelon are among the fresh and sweet selections. At major celebrations, special steamed rice cakes are presented as a tasty style treat.

Usually in Korean the host pays for everything and if you are ever invited out for a drinking session or meal with Korean friends, you will it difficult to pay the bill or even contribute towards it. For Visitor the same applies even if it is you that doing the inviting. All manner of tricks will be used to beat you to the cashier will be ordered not to accept your money.

  • Any snow at ski resorts an Seoul by 22 nov?

My family is thinking of heading down to Seoul for skiing on 22 nov for a few days. I%26#39;m wondering if it%26#39;s too early to ski and the slopes are not ready as there%26#39;s not enough snow. Please advise. Thanks

Any snow at ski resorts an Seoul by 22 nov?

The ski resorts near Seoul usually open late November or early December as mostly it does not snow in Seoul and the area nearby at that time. However, if you are willing to go further to Gangwon Province there are several resorts such as Yongpyung, Phoenix park and Sungwoo which all will have opened. There was big snow in Gangwon province last weekend and it will be more cold from next week so you could enjoy some skiing even though the slopes are not all covered by natural snow but artificial one.

Will there be snow in Feb?

Just how cold does Incheon/Seoul get in mid-February? I have a 27 hour layover, and I%26#39;d like to see Seoul without carrying a big jacket around.

Will there be snow in Feb?

It is still very cold in mid Feb. The temperature is below 0 degree in the morning and less than 5 during the day time. You should bring warm jacket or bomber unless you are living in a cold area. The winter of Korea is very cold and super dry.

  • Few hours in Seoul, where to go shopping?

Hi we are arriving in Seoul 5:30am this Friday, and leaving Seoul to London 13:10. Would appreciate if someone can suggest where we can go shopping within these few hours. Thank you!

Few hours in Seoul, where to go shopping?

Hmmm, I am not sure if you have enough time to venture out to Seoul from Incheon Airport then comeback within at least 2hrs before your departure. Traveling time between airport to central areas of Seoul is about 90 min, but it could take longer if you get caught in Seoul%26#39;s notorious traffic jams. Most of shop won%26#39;t open for business until 10 AM, which is about time you should be start going back to airport. Maybe Namdaemun Market is one possible place for you to explore since it opens around 7 am. (鈥isitkorea.or.kr/enu/SH/SH_EN_7_2_4_1.jsp)

But if I were you I rather relax on transit hotel or sauna at the airport, and shop at the duty free shopping mall (it%26#39;s like department store) within airport.

Few hours in Seoul, where to go shopping?

    Thanks Blee246 for your suggestions.

I heard there is a shopping mall somewhere in Incheon. Where is this shopping mall called ';Air Joy';. Is it better of to go there rather than rash out to Namdaemun Market? Thank you.

I don%26#39;t think you have enough time to go into Seoul, but I heard there is E-Mart (a discount store/supermarket like Walmart) about five minutes from the airport. I just searched some Korean website and E-Mart is actually located in the basement of Air Joy shopping center. So I guess you can take the shuttle bus from the airport to get there. It looks like there%26#39;s a free shuttle from the airport, right outside exit 3 and 12 on the third floor.

It looks like it%26#39;s actually bus stop number 3 and 12, not the exit numbers.

    AirJoy / E-Mart doesn%26#39;t open until 10:30am

    airport.kr/airport/鈥?/a>

How far away is Namdaemun Market from the airport?

what is the most convenient way to get there?

Namdaemoon market is near city hall of Seoul. You can take limousine bus to go which stops many locations downtown Seoul. I am pretty sure you can get better information from Tourist info desk at airport. Keep in mind that Namdaemoon is traditional outdoor market, very popular tourist spot, so be prepared for for hustle and bustle.

    Hi all,

I will be traveling to Korea early Dec this year, and I was wondering if there are any public transport from Phoenix Park Ski Resort to Mt Seorak, and the estimated cost?

Or are there any one day tour package that I can purchase from the hotel and its cost?

Also, may I know roughly how long the journey will take?

    Thanks loads in advance!

Directions from Phoenix Park Ski Resort to Mt Seorak

There is no public transportation from Phoenix park to Mr.Seorak. If you want to try, you should take a free shuttle bus from Phoenix to Jangpyung terminal. And you should take a bus to Gangreung, then transfer to Mr.Seorak. It takes more than 3 hrs including transit time, so I wouldn%26#39;t recommend to use publc tranportation. You could check some package trips combining ski resorts and Mr.Seorak for foreigners provided by local travel agency. Sorry, I have no idea of it.

    Hi,

I%26#39;m also from Singapore. I will be in Korea, Busan from the 23rd May to 28th May. And would hope to fly to jeju on the 28 may. However, I am facing a lot of problems trying to contact jeju-air directly from Singapore..

Is there anyone who can help me by contacting jeju-air/reserve air-tickets or anything along the line.. Would appreciate some guidance as I%26#39;m really stuck on this issue.

    Thank you very much.

    ~percussgal~

    hi,

i posted a reply in this forum on someone%26#39;s question on a jeju itin based on my trip to jeju in march. although jeju is pretty easy to get around, if you do not speak korean and cannot read korean, i would suggest a tour guide who speaks in english. also, you will not have to stress about getting lost or finding the right attractions! the tour guide will also probably help you manage your time the best so you can see everything you want to see and not waste time.

you can book your flights through korean air. i flew in from new york city into incheon airport in seoul. then, we had to go to kimpo airport and then fly to jeju. you can book your ticket at the korean air website.

For guesthouse, you can try Jeju Hiking Inn. I think their rate is 11,000 won per person per night. That was the last time I checked in July 08. Another one is Letsgojeju guesthouse. Both are available on the internet:

    Percussgal,

I flew Jeju Air in my recent trip to Jeju in Sept08. Their website is in Korean, no English. I had difficulty contacting them initially. The numbers on their website doesn%26#39;t seem to be working. I managed to get a Korean friend to help and finally get through to them. I have to check the contact number again with this Korean friend, and if I managed to find will pass it to you. Other than this, it was a good trip and staffs were very friendly, helpful and can speak a little English. We had no regret flying with Jeju Air.

right boots 2 wear during winter season

Leather will be better choice, although these days suede boots also got special treatments so it won%26#39;t be ruined on wet-weather day. Just make sure that whatever boots you get, it is waterproofed so any melted snow won%26#39;t get into you boots.

Driving in the snow in korea

Would it be ok to rent a car n drive through the snowy conditions in Korea?

I should be travelling around Korea for a month so I figured that driving might b good.. but I%26#39;ve never driven in snow. Any advice?

Driving in the snow in korea

If you can rent or buy a snow chain, it would not be any problem with driving in snowy weather.

However you should be very careful in a highway and especially in Gangwon province where sometimes drivers have some trouble with heavy snow.

Sometimes traffic is blocked in the mountain roads such as Daegwanryung, Misiryung but not very often in another areas.

Driving in the snow in korea

You will need several days to adjust in left side, right lane driving system. Reverse for me when I had to drive in Thailand. I am sure you will find yourself turning on a wiper when you wanted to turn on turn signals.

If you stay in major cities and major roads, you won%26#39;t have much trouble regarding snow on the road. Korean citizens are very impatient so Korean public service pays very good attention about road condition when it snows. If it snows too much, especially during daytime, there might be some trouble, but that is when you should avoid driving.

If you are not driving into Kangwon province, out of express way, you won%26#39;t need snow chains. Also, many Korean cars will be equipped with snow tires during winter.

Anyway, if you happen to drive in snowy road, reduce your speed, try not to brake suddenly. Many accidents happen when one tries to go or stop suddenly. Cars can rotate because of uneven rotation. If your car is not equipped with ABS system, you might need to press foot brake several times rather than one big time.

I only exprienced slippy snowy road several times for last 10 years when I drived in Seoul, so don%26#39;t worry too much.

    meeting someone at ICN

    Hi,

My girl friend and I will arrive at the ICN airport - with a couple of hours apart. we want to go through immigration together. This means one must wait for another (she will wait for me) for a couple of hours.

It sounds easy enough. All we need to do is have her not go to immigration until I show up. However, some logistic issues come up after I research the ICN web site.

It seems that we will be both arrive at the second floor - and I believe there is only one building, one general arrival area before immigration. Problem is, I can%26#39;t find any shops/restaurants. First, that will make the wait pretty boring (and I will have an earful. :-) ). Second, it makes hard to find an anchor location, where I can ask her not to walk away from for a couple of hours. I don%26#39;t want her to complicate matters by going to the transfer area on the 3rd or 4th floor. I%26#39;d worry if she can come back down to the second floor again.

Also, if there is absolutely nothing just on the second floor before immigration - would it be problem for some one to hang around there? Wouldn%26#39;t She look pretty suspicious?

    Any ideas?

    meeting someone at ICN

There is nothing before immigration; there never is in international airports, I would say.

    meeting someone at ICN

There is nothing but a very long wide corridor - about one kilometer long. I can%26#39;t remember if there are seats there or not. There are toilets. I don%26#39;t think they%26#39;ll mind if you hang out there, but I think security will become aware that you%26#39;re waiting and if it%26#39;s not busy they may ask why you%26#39;re waiting.

You should make plans to meet after Immigration.

As others have mentioned the only thing before is very clean tolites.

Please explain what is the problem in going through immigration by herself or by yourself?

Part of the art of answering questions well on TA is to understand the motivation of the OP, as well as to understand any history s/he has on the forum, rather than just jump in and speculate.

The OP has been given good advice about the physical layout at this airport. As far as advice, besides posting here, why not discuss your underlying concerns with the personnel of the airlines involved, who may be able to suggest a viable solution.

    Hi again..

I hope I am not being referred as as a speculator here.

tt16888 has been given good advice about the layout of the airport, true. That%26#39;s why I was feeling pity for the poor girl waiting in an area of an airport with only a few policemen and nothing else. I was trying to give my contribution in pointing that if there is not a realistic reason to not going through immigration alone, time could be better spent in a nicer and friendlier area of the airport

tt16888 ~ wondering if its okay for her to wait outside. there are a couple of coffeshops outside and she can just walk around. Or if you worry about her getting lost just ask her to wait at exit 12 or maybe an airline counter, one floor up.

I didn%26#39;t pay much attention when myself arrived in ICN, but when I had chance to wait my friend arrive in ICN, I remember there were 3 to 4 sections marked alphabetically in total.

Before immigration, there is definitely nothing, but I am afraid you and your girlfriend might arrive in different sections of immigration.

I think it would be easier to meet at somewhere outside the immigration, i.e. Mc Donald%26#39;s or KFC, if it is okay with you.

  • Mt. Seorak National Park

I am planning a trip to Seoul end Nov - early Dec. Would like to check .. is it too cold to visit Mt Seorak? Also bringing 2 kids along and wondering if it is worthwhile to travel 4hrs there and back.

    Appreciate some advice!! Thanks.

    Mt. Seorak National Park

The weather is very cold then and especially in Gangwon-do where Mt.Seorak is sited. However if it snows, it would be o.k.to enjoy winter mood. You can also easily see the beautiful snow view in the Gwongeumsung by cable car if you do not want to walk into the mountain.

Are you planning to visit Seorok only or combine spa and ski trip nearby? I recommend the latter.

    Mt. Seorak National Park

    Thanks for the response.

Initially we are contemplating whether we should have a day trip from Seoul to Mt Seorak or going Mt Seorak after the ski trip. With your advice, it is probably better and easier to combine with our ski trip.

By the way, can your share more on the combine spa? Is that the hot spring? Is it a worthwhile trip?

The nearest spa in the area of Mr.Seorak is in Hanhwa Resort - called Seorak Waterpia. You could enjoy spa in the resort after hiking or vice versa.

The other option is combination of ski trip and hiking. Yongpyong resort is the nearest one from Mr.Seorak and it takes about 1 hour. Recently Yongpyong built a new water park in the ski resort(Peak Island), so you could enjoy both skiing and spa in one place. However I do not have any idea about transportation from Yongpyong to Mr.Seorak and the opposite, as there is no shuttle bus in between. If you rent a car, it would not be a problem. Visit the website of Yongpyong at

    http://www.yongpyong.co.kr/

Just to check, I will be in Seoul from 15 - 22 Nov. Will there be snow or too early.

If I plan to go MT Seorak should I stay 1 night or just take a day trip from Seoul and back.

    Thanks

Hi, am thinking of hiking at Mt Seorak when I visit Korea early Dec (before 10 DEc) and I wonder if it is safe to do so? Will Mt Seorak close for winter? or is there any places/ hiking routes close during the Dec period? Will it be dangerous? Bascially my friend and I (2 female) will be hiking on our own and gg there by ourselves too.

Would appreciate if anyone can help.

    thx a lot ^^

how much currency to bring for 13 days??

Absolute minimum is US$20 per day. I%26#39;d go with US$45 a day.

how much currency to bring for 13 days??

Korea is a place that has a wide range of prices for just about everything. From cheap to expensive.

Example if you want to travel from Seoul to Pusan first class on a KTX train can cost 71,700 won but a standing ticket on a Mugunghwa train is 20,100 won.

Food is also the same you can eat dirt cheap from street vendors or drop $200 on something. (you must try some of the street food in Korea)

You can cover most high expense purchases (hotels) with a credit card.

Personaly I would want $100 per day plus another $100 to cover Lotte World. Plus $$$ to cover shopping.

thx a lot....and....one more question....im from mexico...soo...is that ok if i only bring a debit card....and get money from an ATM ???

thx for the info...and...those $100 for lotte world...includes the rides...entrance???

There is no guarantee your card will work. Bring 1/4 in cash and 3/4 US dollars AmEx checks. See if there%26#39;s a difference between the straight exchange from pesos to won, and pesos to US dollars to won.

thx a lot again ^^ .... do you know how can i check that??? i have no idea O.o

    It should be the same...

    Korean Barbeque in Seoul???

We%26#39;re going to be in Seoul Oct 22-27 and I%26#39;d love a recommendation for a Korean BBQ restaurant. We%26#39;d been to Seoul on a one day layover last year and spent the day searching in vain.

    Korean Barbeque in Seoul???

Korean BBQ restaurants are everywhere! You can simply look inside the restaurant and see if they have a grill on the table. Or, look for a sign ';갈비 (Kalbi/Galbi)'; or ';불고기(Bulgogi/Pulgogi)';.

Bulgogi Brothers in Myeongdong is suitable for those who cannot speak Korean. It%26#39;s a Korean BBQ restaurant with a touch of Western (in terms of ambient).

    Korean Barbeque in Seoul???

    where do you stay?

    Seoul is BIG.

If Gangnam (south of the river) you could go to one of the Samwon Gardens; one near Apgujeong Sta., one near Deachi junction (close to Coex).

You%26#39;re after (I expect) coals in the middle of the table, and thi8n sliced meat?

Another thing to do is walk along any road and look inside for tables with a hole in the middle-perhaps covered by a polished metal sheet. Then stick your head in and ask ';galbishik issoyo?'; (Koreans: please excuse my bad Korean, but it works!).

NB many will have low tables, for sitting on the ground. You don%26#39;t want that. Really. Unless you%26#39;re good at it!

sorry: not Deachi but Daechi Junct.

Thank You! I will be sure to try one! I was so disappointed last time when I couldn%26#39;t find one. It turns out that I am not a fan of bibimbop and most recommendations on tripadvisor have been for things like pizza! I%26#39;m not going to Korea for Italian food!

Thank you. Is there a difference between Kalbi and Bulgogi or are those just different terms for the same thing?

Galbi, in the new spelling, is ribs usually of pork. Bulgogi is usually beef in thin strips.

All less clear than you might think as there are variations on the theme; different types of each meat, different marinades; different cooking methods (charcoal from different tree types, gas etc etc)

Actually, Galbi is beef rib not pork. Here is a site with pictures of the dishes to help you.

    http://www.trifood.com/food.html

Check out this NYTimes article about restaurants in Seoul, several bbq places are mentioned here, nytimes.com/2008/07/20/travel/20CHOICE.html…

While I like beef bbq, right now it seems many Koreans prefer pork bbq or beef, mainly samggepsal (pork belly, like thick bacon). It%26#39;s quite good as beef, so do try it while you are there.

If you are willing spend for quality, ask about places that specialize on ';han woo'; local Korean beef, not imported beef from Australia or America. It%26#39;s good but really expensive.

Pork Galbi/Beef Galbi/Pork Bulgogi/Beef Bulgogi are all available!

Beef is more expensive than pork in Korea. Hanwoo (Korean beef) is much more expensive than imported beef. (Koreans try to avoid US beef for mad cow disease)

Pork bulgogi is marinated in chilli sauce and totally different with Beef Bulgogi(soy sauce based).

Pork belly is the most popular BBQ among Koreans for its reasonable price.

Hope you enjoy BBQ and have fun in Seoul.

no. Been past it, looks ok. It%26#39;s not that easy to get to, as (as far as I can recall) it%26#39;s not on the limousine bus route from Incheon airport. Check that, though on the KAL Limo website.

Certainly the nearest subway is (I think)on line 7 which is not brilliant for tourist sights.

  • Not sure how to pick hotel

Hi, I have poured through TA Seoul hotels, and I am undecided on what to do.

I am arriving on 25th December and leave 30th December. I am on my year end break with my gf. I think she wants to shop and hang out. I want to take a break from a year of stressful work.

I can get some decent discounted rates at the Grand Hilton.

Yet I was thinking of somewhere central, convenient and comfortable, like ibis myeong dong, and save a bit of money (to spend on shopping, lotte world and food).

I don%26#39;t enjoy commuting, as its tiring, cumbersome (if caught in traffic), crowded during peak hours, and expensive if long distance by taxi.

Because of this, I am a bit lost on which hotel to pick. Anyone can help me think this through?

Not sure how to pick hotel

Seoul%26#39;s traffic jam will worsen as it reaches end of the year, so I think Grand Hilton is not a good choice, as you say you don%26#39;t enjoy commuting.

But, in terms of hotel itself, Grand Hilton is quite good and have more peaceful atmosphre compared to other downtowm hotels.

If you want to go for 5 star with more central location, I think Westin Chosun, Plaza is good. I%26#39;ve once stayed in Westin Chosun and I think it was fine. Room was rather small because it%26#39;s quite old building but it was recently renovated.

Millenium Hilton can be another choice. Hotel itself is a bit off the downtown but you can walk to Namdaemoon and as far as I know hotel have shuttle service to Itaewon. Another advantage is that the hotel has casino in the same building.

If you decide to save on hotel, Ibis could be safe choice, and I suggest you check on Sejong hotel also. You can walk to Myongdong from the hotel. It is rated 3 star on TA but I think it is close to 4 star.

Location wise, I think you should also check on Fraser suites. It is located in Insadong, and you can walk to Jongro. If you don%26#39;t mind a bit of walking, you could also walk to Kyong Bok Palace from there.

Seoul has limited choice in terms of good hotels, but with recent global economic crisis thing and added devaluation of Korean won, I think you should also try contacting hotels directly.

Hope you have good time in Seoul.

Seoul In April - Where to Stay close to the Exhibition Cent

We are looking at going to Seoul in April for an exhibition for our company, any suggestions on where to stay to be in close-ish proximity to the Atlantic Hall? We dont mind catching a cab or subway a few stops. Would like to do some sight seeing and shopping whilst we are there. Also whats the temperature like during April etc.

    Thanks

Seoul In April - Where to Stay close to the Exhibition Cent

Grand Intercontinental, best for access to Coex - 2 mins walk-and from airport (next door to KCAT airport limousine terminal). At Samseong subway.

COEX Intercont, not so easy for the bus or subway, slightly cheaper. Ibis Gangnam, 5 mins walk.

Several others nearby (Park Hyatt etc)

    1st time visit to korea

    Hello,

I am from singapore, i need hep from friends regards is it prefered to go korea on my own free and easy tour or to join a tour group from singapore to korea ie easier.

    I very confuse...

Tot to travel on 19 dec to 27th dec

    1st time visit to korea

It depends on what you want to see and do. I just came back from a free and easy trip. it costs abt $500 - $1000 more then going with singapore tour groups. (Partly because i spend 10 days rather than the ave 8 days)

    Grace Travel

I would be going to korea in Dec and would like to find out the operating hours of sinchon as I am planning my trip currently any advice?

    operating hours of Sinchon

    Hi clymax,

I am not sure what you mean by ';sinchon'; but If you mean ';Shinchon'; area in general, it will be quite crowded and active until midnight. If it%26#39;s weekend, probably even more.

Also, if you walk around it%26#39;s note difficult to find some pubs or restaruants opening even until dawn.

Catching the last bus at the airport

My flight arrives at 9:10pm to ICN.

I noticed that the airport bus service (depending on route) ends as early as 10:30pm.

I have not booked my hotel yet, how long does it take to get from the plane to the buses? I do have star alliance gold so I think my bags will come up earlier than others at the baggage claims.

Catching the last bus at the airport

You can check information on airport bus service on

    www.airportlimousine.co.kr

The home page is well display in Korean, but if you look carefully, there is English - foreign language button.

I%26#39;ve checked some bus numbers going through Jung Gu, which is the downtown, and I found the latest one ends at 11pm.

Anyway, back to your original question, assuming your flight lands on time, and you are not stuck at the end of the airplane, and that you will get your baggage quite fast, I think it will take around 45 minutes until you get to the bus station.

FYI, KAL limousine is a bit more expansive but could be better choice if you stay in a hotel that is covered by KAL limousine.

Catching the last bus at the airport

no problem. You%26#39;ll be through immigration fast at that time, and I always find my bags waiting.

Unless the plane is delayed, you%26#39;ll be in no difficulties.

  • Place to stay in Seoul (hostels)

I saw this link on TA....Does anyone know anything about any of these hostels and what would be a good location?

    www.hostelworld.com/findabed.php…

I will be arriving at ICN 4:30 PM in the afternoon and leaving 2 days later from ICN at 6PM.

I%26#39;ve never previously been to Korea and any suggestions as to how to spend 2 days would be appreciated.

I like cultural and historical spots, also enjoy good food, but I like to travel at the lower end, costwise.

Thanks. Also, I%26#39;m traveling alone, if there are local guides that are volunteer types, would be a good thing to know about.

Place to stay in Seoul (hostels)

I%26#39;m in much the same boat, but I only have 27 hrs in Seoul, so I decided that an ultra-convenient location would be necessary. Since I%26#39;ll only be in town for 1 night, I%26#39;ve splurged on the $84. Vabien II where I can get the regular airport limo direct to the door. I tried to book on the Seoul Stopover program, but it%26#39;s all booked up for my travel dates. I plan to use the free Goodwill Guides, and here are a few good sources:

    …visitkorea.or.kr/enu/GK/GK_EN_2_7_3_1.jsp (Goodwill Guides)

    …visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_5_1.jsp (Transit Tours)

(Incheon Airport) - I can%26#39;t get the airport%26#39;s own website to load today!

It will be cold in Seoul, so bring mittens! I%26#39;m going on to SE Asia, so I plan on abandoning my coat at the airport should anyone inbound need one on 2/20/09 8PM, size L, mens?

Place to stay in Seoul (hostels)

Thanks for your help, when are you planning to be there?

Sorry....I see you put 2/20 for the coat....

I can%26#39;t use Seoul stopover, because I%26#39;m not flying in on Asiana or Korean Air Lines. I wonder if it works with Delta, a SkyMiles partner.

    The website looks good.

    www.seoulstopover.com/koreanair/index.asp

No, only for the 2 Korean lines. You%26#39;ll enjoy the airport - one of the best 3 in the world, it%26#39;s just HUGE (bring your rollerskates).

  • Seoul Stopover Program

I%26#39;m thinking about using the Seoul Stopover Program offered to KE and OZ passengers transiting ICN. Has anyone used the program? The quoted hotel rates, are they already discounted to 50%? How were the hotels - pretty limited choice seems to me!

    Seoul Stopover Program

sorry to say I%26#39;ve never heard of either. I fly through ICN on OZ several times a year but this hasn%26#39;t appeared on my radar. I get a free night in one direction (eg SYD-LHR).

Is there something else on offer?

    Seoul Stopover Program

There%26#39;s a button right on the Asiana website for the program, but their so-called bargain hotels start over $100., and I hate 4-5 star places anyway!

possibly only on the US site, as not on the Europe one.

100 US is cheap for Seoul: beware the hotels aren%26#39;t in ';Incheon Airport City'; (eg Hotel June). It%26#39;s not a great place to stay to be honest.

I just checked the site myself and it shows Milennium Hilton for 130USD. I think it is already discounted.

I am sure there will be some limitations but if you can get your hotel room at that price, I think it is a bargain. Hotels shown are all in downtown so I think this is a promotion for stopover passengers who intend to stay several days in Seoul.

On Hilton website. advanced purchase for Millennium Hilton is US $130= 200,000Won. So maybe this figure on Asiana is not discounted.

This Hilton is not in town, and not easy to get to- not on limousine bus route.

correction: utter drivel in my last message!

Yes it is 130 US, but it IS in town. I was thinking of the Swissotel (now Grand Hilton).

And it%26#39;s on line 1 of the KAL limo route (Namsan route)

I tried to book the best 3 or four hotels (I like the Lotte at city hall), but no dice. All the Seoul Stopover rooms are already booked for my date (2/19), so I%26#39;ll do it on my own. As I say, I can%26#39;t stand 5* hotels anyway - hate to have to tip a bellman/doorman when I only have a carry-on pack.

on tipping. DON%26#39;T do it in Seoul- even in cabs, you might just make up to nearest thousand won, but even that might not be well received!

Tipping is just not done in hotels

Ethelman2 - wonderful news about tipping, I%26#39;m totally against tipping everywhere!!!

    New Years Eve in Seoul

Any suggestion for the New Year in Seoul? Looking to get a group of buddies from Osan to trek up there for the weekend.

    New Years Eve in Seoul

    Corey~

We did this last year when we were at Osan!

We got a whole bunch of people and we all got rooms at the Grand Hyatt. There is a bar in the basement, JJ Mahoneys, it%26#39;s a HUGE bar/club/restaurant thing. We all reserved tables there (you have to buy a couple of bottles at about $100 apiece but with a group it%26#39;s not too bad) and they had an awesome cover band from Australia, tons of crazy neon lights, DJs, Dance contests, it was really a GREAT party! Otherwise you can try to go down to Seoul Plaza which is where the main action is but getting a cab back anywhere is brutal and last year we had a midnight curfew (I%26#39;ve heard they%26#39;ve changed it...) so we didn%26#39;t want to risk it. Some people did leave the hotel and go down there and they said it was cool. Anyway we shut that JJ Mahoney%26#39;s down (we also snuck in a massive bottle of Jack--it%26#39;s totally dark in there...) and it was a blast. I highly recommend it!

    Good luck!

    McK

    New Years Eve in Seoul

    01 & 02 Jan - where can I go in Seoul ?

    Hi, there,

Thot of staying in Seoul from 24 Dec till 03 Jan, but 01 Jan is public holiday. Where I can/can%26#39;t go ? Any special place/event that I can visit on new year day ?

    Thanks

    SL

    01 %26amp; 02 Jan - where can I go in Seoul ?

If you don%26#39;t mind massive crowd, may be you could try visiting Jong ro area on New Year%26#39;s eve. Koreans celebrate New Year by ringing the big bell in Bo Shin Gak, and around there is very very crowded.

So, on the other hand, it could be wise to avoid that area in general.

1st Jan is a public holiday but usually most of shops or restaurants will do thier business as usual.

    01 %26amp; 02 Jan - where can I go in Seoul ?

    Thanks Puha.

How about Xmas day ? Business as usual ?

    Sofitel ambassador hote-Seoul

We are stopping in Seoul en route to Australia. We have paid to stay in the above hotel on way out and have been allocated a free hotel on way back by Air Asiana. We have been warned about taxi drivers trying to pick tourists up at Airport and over charging. We have a toddler, what would be best option to get to and from the Sofitel?

Someone said there is a shttle bus run by hotel does anyone know? Also anyone know how far from airport it is? Would it be feasible to use underground/subway?

    Sofitel ambassador hote-Seoul

If you don%26#39;t feel comfortable taking a taxi, I think you should take KAL limousine bus. It is run by Korean Air or its sub division and runs from ICN to downtown hotel directly.

Sofitel Ambassador is one of their destination and it will take about 60-80 minutes depending on the traffic. So you can also take this bus in front of your hotel back to ICN.

If you are doing stop over in Seoul with Asiana Air, try asking Asiana Air or your travel agency because sometimes they give free KAL limousine bus tickets for stop over passengers.

    Sofitel ambassador hote-Seoul

you can check yourself on KAL limousine bus homepage:

    www.kallimousine.com

you will have to find ';english'; button.

you won%26#39;t get free limo to your own stopover hotel; the cost of KAL is abt 15$US, UK7 pounds (14,000 won) per person.

Taxis do NOT overcharge in my experience but the meter charge is pretty high. The bus is better, as your luggage goes under the bus and is offloaded for you.

The metro is bad news unless you like stairs; it%26#39;s also pretty slow, and you need to change at least at Gimpo airport to the main city metro.

    Journey is about 35 miles.

Ask where you stay on way back; beware hotels in Incheon Airport town, which aren%26#39;t very western and may cause toddler issues.

    Thank you for your help

    Thanks for that

    this is the best solution.
