Korean Barbeque in Seoul???

We%26#39;re going to be in Seoul Oct 22-27 and I%26#39;d love a recommendation for a Korean BBQ restaurant. We%26#39;d been to Seoul on a one day layover last year and spent the day searching in vain.

Korean Barbeque in Seoul???

Korean BBQ restaurants are everywhere! You can simply look inside the restaurant and see if they have a grill on the table. Or, look for a sign ';갈비 (Kalbi/Galbi)'; or ';불고기(Bulgogi/Pulgogi)';.

Bulgogi Brothers in Myeongdong is suitable for those who cannot speak Korean. It%26#39;s a Korean BBQ restaurant with a touch of Western (in terms of ambient).

Korean Barbeque in Seoul???

where do you stay?

Seoul is BIG.

If Gangnam (south of the river) you could go to one of the Samwon Gardens; one near Apgujeong Sta., one near Deachi junction (close to Coex).

You%26#39;re after (I expect) coals in the middle of the table, and thi8n sliced meat?

Another thing to do is walk along any road and look inside for tables with a hole in the middle-perhaps covered by a polished metal sheet. Then stick your head in and ask ';galbishik issoyo?'; (Koreans: please excuse my bad Korean, but it works!).

NB many will have low tables, for sitting on the ground. You don%26#39;t want that. Really. Unless you%26#39;re good at it!

sorry: not Deachi but Daechi Junct.

Thank You! I will be sure to try one! I was so disappointed last time when I couldn%26#39;t find one. It turns out that I am not a fan of bibimbop and most recommendations on tripadvisor have been for things like pizza! I%26#39;m not going to Korea for Italian food!

Thank you. Is there a difference between Kalbi and Bulgogi or are those just different terms for the same thing?

Galbi, in the new spelling, is ribs usually of pork. Bulgogi is usually beef in thin strips.

All less clear than you might think as there are variations on the theme; different types of each meat, different marinades; different cooking methods (charcoal from different tree types, gas etc etc)

Actually, Galbi is beef rib not pork. Here is a site with pictures of the dishes to help you.

Check out this NYTimes article about restaurants in Seoul, several bbq places are mentioned here, nytimes.com/2008/07/20/travel/20CHOICE.html…

While I like beef bbq, right now it seems many Koreans prefer pork bbq or beef, mainly samggepsal (pork belly, like thick bacon). It%26#39;s quite good as beef, so do try it while you are there.

If you are willing spend for quality, ask about places that specialize on ';han woo'; local Korean beef, not imported beef from Australia or America. It%26#39;s good but really expensive.

Pork Galbi/Beef Galbi/Pork Bulgogi/Beef Bulgogi are all available!

Beef is more expensive than pork in Korea. Hanwoo (Korean beef) is much more expensive than imported beef. (Koreans try to avoid US beef for mad cow disease)

Pork bulgogi is marinated in chilli sauce and totally different with Beef Bulgogi(soy sauce based).

Pork belly is the most popular BBQ among Koreans for its reasonable price.

Hope you enjoy BBQ and have fun in Seoul.

We%26#39;re at the Shilla Hotel. Anything over this way?
